Any ideas for planning an affordable but great trip to Hawaii?

My family and I are planning on going to Hawaii over the summer. We either want to stay at Oahu or Maui. Maui have cheaper Flights and I really like the Hyatt but it is expensive. Oahu has more expensive flights but it has a cheaper hotel (Hilton). Are there any other activities that we can do on either island. Thanks!
